corky elm layer

Post by Matthew »

Thought id post a pic of a cork bark elm i recently severed. Layer was set last november and seperated 2 weeks ago. I cut in hard only leaving about 1/3 of the trees thickness when i did the layer as i heard cork elms can bridge gaps easily. seems it worked. i used a 8 inch pot to set the layer , cut down one side slipped it over and wired the side up. I have left a sacrifice branch on atm which is healing a large scar. i Think a few seasons this will be a very nice tree shohin size at 20cm with a trunk size about 2.5 inches. It will spend one season in this pot than into a nice bonsai pot when the time comes. im looking forward to developing this one. :tu:

A very nice start Matthew :tu: I look forward to its progression. As you know i have one going at the moment and have been surprised by the slow progress of the branches thickening. It might pay to leave this one in a grow box while you are doing branch work :?:

Bodhi this tree was in the ground for several years grown by shibui than i had it planted in a bonsai pot for several months before performing the layer. most branches are at the desired thickness and its just a matter of spending quality time with the roots next winter and ramification. i wanted a shohin tree with a low primary branch as i quite like that and this one will do :tu:
