All of the above is good advice with the manure and pea straw ect. Personally I would do all that and then get some worms going in it. They are Gods ferterlisers. Worms will do more for the soil structure than anything else. We used to deal with a flower grower who used to replenish his soil in his hot houses with pea straw and worms. He would then rest it for a couple of months and then plant it out. He was able to reduce his ferterliser program by a third and had less decease and insect problems.
Best thing to do for the soil is after digging in the manure and letting it settle, cover the area with carpet or something similar to help keep it moist and introduce the worms. Then sit back and let them do their work. The trees will never look back. The worms eat anything that was once alive and turn it back into pure soil. They also earate the soil as they did and help prevent compaction.

Just my :2c:

I also agree with josh, as last year i turned the soil then put all the autum leaves over the top, some sheep dung thickly on top as well. also some
dynamic lifter lightly over that
. I then watered , Put down some straw then layed some carpet over the lot and left till early spring and what was left after the worms i dug inn.
Then just before planting i added another layer of sheep dung and some blood and bone with some sand & small granite. let us know how you go. :tu2:

I find that compost worms just turn up if you supply the right conditions. There are plenty now in other peoples gardens and they are such great travellers that within a few months some will have found your new patch and started to breed.

Its important to note that different worms have different requirements.
Native earthworms like relatively unimproved soils and don't like very rich garden soil.
Composting worms (tiger, red and blues) need a really high organic soil and constant moisture - these are the ones for worm farms, compost bins and rich garden beds with plenty of mulch.
Native flat tail worms and scrub worms live in intermediate soils. They need constant moisture and a reasonable level of fertility and organic matter like good garden beds but the introduced composting worms will breed much quicker and displace these natives if conditions suit them.
