when to repot quince and crab apple
I have a quince in a grow pot, with a self seeded crab apple that I want to keep, and was wondering when is the best time to repot them, I had thought july, but I was told today, that I should be doing my plums now... does this mean I should be doing the quince and crab apple? both are in full leaf
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines

Re: when to repot quince and crab apple
Wait until they are leafless, almost without exception, the best time to re-pot deciduous trees is at the end of winter/early spring just before or at budburst. This way the roots if cut will heal quickly and not be open and exposed to rot and fungal infections for very long.

Wiki is set up for the majority of users & most are in the northern hemisphere where now is spot on for repotting.

Re: when to repot quince and crab apple
When the buds swell is best, but at least wait till the weather isn't getting colder when it's starting to get just a bit warmer is ok. Depends on your repotting workload but I don't start till at least end of July in Sydney.

Re: when to repot quince and crab apple
The wiki is based around the times in Sydney, as this is mid way up the eastern seaboard. Your own condition will vary from these which is why it is a Guide only and not the god given word
From this page here https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index. ... hould_I%3F We say that
Repot and root prune a
Deciduous tree - Usually Just before Bud swell at the end of Winter / early Spring
an on this page.... https://www.ausbonsai.com.au/wiki/index. ... h_month%3F
June
If you have many Deciduous trees, you can start Repotting and root prune now with the trees that experience early dormancy. Just ensure the Roots and soil do not stay wet thru the winter causing root rot.
Do not know where this info came from, but the wiki content was base on northern info but was converted at great effort to our southern hemisphere conditions. If there are any errors, then please point them out as it should be accurate as can be for our conditions locally

Re: when to repot quince and crab apple
The only people that shuold be repotting now, are generally those with large collections or nursery men who have too much work to leave them all till later.fiveoffive wrote:I did my Qunice about 2 weeks ago. Its doing fine. Wikki say's around about now ish you can start.

I have nearly 100 trees in ( but only 10 in bonsai pots, and i will not start to repot until mid July. This will leave me plenty of time to get the ones in need of a repot before bud break.
Those in the southern or colder climes ( alpine Vic / SA or tassie) will have and extra 2 - 4 weeks to repot than those in Sydney
PS. My Elms do not go deciduous at all in Sydney where I am, so really can be done any time thru winter and into spring. ( this is one of the local exceptions I can apply)
