Alpine Grevillea - Grevillea Alpinea

Post by alpineart »

This was purchased from a Native Nursery in Mansfield Victoria 18 months ago aptly name "Alpinea". It was a new hybrid the nursery was working on , Alpine Grevillea - Grevillea Alpina x Red Cats Claw or Mountain Grevillea .This was from there first batch of new plants , whilst it wasn't ready for release to the public i managed to persuade the proprietor that it would only be used for a Bonsai in a year or two .I purchased a couple of different Mountain Grevilea's at the same time , due for removal about now . I planted it in the ground

as an attraction for the small alpine honey eaters .Unfortunately the cat owners in the neighborhood are as feral as their cats and as irresponsible .I decided to remove it today and make it into a bonsai trainer .This way i can perch it high off the ground and hopefully away from the cats . This is a species i have never worked with so it was a matter of hacking back with the hedge trimmers

chopping back with the bonsai cutters and potting up into my bonsai blend

, easy as 1-2-3. If it survives it will be a good reason to go and purchase a few more . The plant when purchased was a tube stock of around 6-8 mm now it has a base of 50mm , one leader needs a good bend to balance it with the others , that will test a bloke out as it has no flex what so ever . Now all i have to do is explain this moment of madness to the wife .

I have always wondered how a Grevillea Alpina would go as a bonsai! Please keep us post over the next few months!

I just have a question I know they are hardy but why didn't you put it in a native blend or is it ok for them to go in normal mix?

Thank you looks great hope it all works out for you!!!

Hi Guys , i'm very surprised how quick they take off , then again tube stock usually out grows big potted material if put into the ground . Along with the Mountain Grevillea's they have excellent growth .This is a small shub to 1.2 m and the Mountains are to 1.5m .All of them were just plonked onto the clay terraces and had bonsai mix poured around them .No good digging into the clay ,this was lifted off the ground not dug out , hence the 2 boards the wife put in to hold the soil back , this was her baby , she loves natives .

Cheers Alpine
