Wisteria Seed Progression

Hey all,

Sprouted this lil tree a while ago and have been taking periodical photos since. Hoping for it to be a magnificent tree in ten years or so.

Has been growing for just over two months I think.

Do you by any chance know where can I buy some wisteria seeds? I would absolutely love to start some from seed!

Hi MoGanic, that will take off this spring as they grow quick!
It will be fun to grow this...enjoy
I forgot to wire my cutting last spring to get some basic movement in the initial trunk line and now it is ram rod straight
So if you want some shape to it be sure to wire it when it is old enough to handle it, because in my experience wisteria wood is quite brittle and firm once it sets.

Hi mo can I ask what you propagated the seeds in - was it sand or propagation mix. I have 10 seeds I'm going to plant as soon as the mrs is out of the house for long enough!!

Hey guys,

Wisteria seeds I got were from eBay, you just have to be prepared for a high rate of failure with these seeds. Out of my 5 seeds, only 1 germinated.

The idea is to keep them moist and warm, so try to plant in warmer times if possible. Alternatively, and this is what I did, soak the seeds for 24 hours in warm water, not boiling (or even close), then plant them in regular bonsai mix with a little bit of peat or sphag moss mixed through (ok maybe a bit more than a bit), cover the seeds with a 1mm or less layer of soil and cover the whole thing (in my case the actual bonsai pot it was in) with ONE layer of glad wrap. I kept this inside to keep it warm but in the sunniest position possible and it sprouted fairly soon. Word of advice this was the only seed with only ONE layer of glad wrap, therefore the only seed I didn't need to unwrap to check up on and therefore, funnily enough, the only seed that germinated.

eBay if you want really cheap pathetic seeds that probably will require more effort than a pHd in physics to germinate OR do a quick research as to where u might find some Wisteria Tree's and take some truely fresh seeds from there!

NOTE: If you buy from eBay, try purchase from as close a seller to yourself as possible... probably good idea not to purchase from international sellers unless they offer really express post (which would potentially cost quite a lot... so again.. not reccomended).

Wisteria seed germinates really readily. I get more than 90% up just by putting the seed in potting mix - no need to muck around with glad wrap or warm spots???

Mo is right about getting seed. Just find a wisteria then go back in autumn and pick as much seed as you want. I believe they are weeds in the Sydney area and self seed in many roadsides and bush reserves so don't bother to germinate seed Isitangus, just go out and dig some seedlings or mature plants.

Really interested to see what this seedling turns out to be Mo.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you missed a vital word in the advertisement for the seed. "NATIVE" Wisteria. There are no true native wisterias, they come from Asia and America. There is a native vine related to wisteria called Millettia but the one you have is not it either as the seeds are as big as an apricot fruit. The seed that you have bought is a vine called Hardenbergia sometimes called native wisteria. The sellers should specify the botanical name when selling these things.

Anyway, I didn't purchase my seed from the link I posted. Moreover, that is the name of the WEBSITE not part of the advertisement for the wistera. Finally there are NO aussie native plants that have a leaf structure like the wisteria above.

Hey buddy, this is definitely a Wisteria seedling - although the first 3 leaves don't look like it. The long stem with the smaller leaves are definitely Wisteria. The first three leaves are literally "sacrafice leaves" haha they act as a filler until the little leaves can support the plant. The largest leaf behind the plant will drop off soon enough. (PS Pretty sure Mike was kidding hehe)

Wisteria is generally stupidly easy to germinate, but when you buy from eBay haha not much hope.

Mo Ganic, I miss-understood and thought that you had bought the Native Wistaria that you had posted in that link. Did it come with a Latin name? As to me it still does not look like a Wisteria. There was no mention of Wisteria "Tree" (Bolusanthus) in the add was there. Time will tell when the true leaves get a little more mature and the seed leaves drop off.

All good mate, at least we know I'm not trying to bonsai a weed haha.

In a couple weeks the leaves and first two branches will be much more defined, will post a pic then.

Latest update - the old wide baby leaves shrivelled up and were thus removed!

Now we have two branches, and growth has become much slower. I think the little guy is relaxing as it's new leaves are currently more than enough to support its root system and keep it alive for now. Come spring time, however, it will EXPLODE!.
