Is it a lignotuber you have been growing on a bit or is it newly collected?

Freshly collected today Matt , couldn't help but try out one of your shallowest pots mate and i'm keen to see how it goes aswell.


Hi Val, it had 2 very thin dried out roots and 1 slightly bigger root that was dried out. It was still growing well

the thing about the lignotuber is ; it basically is the root now, they have the ability to put out either roots or leaf shoots. Trimming off all of the roots below the lignotuber and planting it will allow it to grow roots . I have flatcut the bottom and put a screw up thru the drainage hole to secure it into the small pot (i think i'm picking up Alpines bad habits ) . Filled with potting mix fines and sand for soil. Buried in another pot to keep soil moist. I have had success with othe lignotubers by treating them in much the same manner.

Thanks for posting this one up Craig, now I know what to do with many of the little trees popping up under the electric fence. I never realised the lignotubers would take so easily (at least I hope this one does for you. I shall watch this space for a while before going nuts on digging).

I had a number of small transplanted Eucs die as an indirect consequence of not securely constraining the lignotuber and having it too high, (All my own fault - rushing, rushing, rushing.I should have gone to a larger pot). I'll just cut and screw from now on in - even if it is to a piece of board which I plant in a larger pot*.

* Much like the technique for creating clumps using a plate or board to cause layering/nebari - see Buffalo Bonsai page or Bonsai4me for example
