Bonsai and Penjing for the NBPCA in 2013

Bonsai and Penjing for the NBPCA for 2013

Hello everyone,

A new park, the National Arboretum Canberra, is to be officially opened in Canberra on Friday the 1st of February 2013 and the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia (NBPCA) will be situated within this new Arboretum and officially opened the following day; Saturday the 2nd of February.
The National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia is a permanent collection of Bonsai and Penjing that will be open to the public and is funded by the ACT government. At the moment it employs a full time curator and a part time assistant curator. The staff is ably assisted by numerous Volunteers based in Canberra and the surrounding area. By arrangement interstate volunteers can also help with the maintenance of the collection.
The collection itself comes from the Bonsai and Penjing community of Australia. Trees can be loaned or donated to the collection by interested persons or groups.
The Loan Bonsai and Penjing form a very important part of the collection as they provide many different types and styles of Bonsai and Penjing that are not currently owned by the collection.
Loans of Bonsai and Penjing are usually for a minimum of 1 year up to a maximum of 3 years although shorter terms may be allowable from the ACT and surrounding areas.
The NBPCA is now actively seeking out Bonsai and Penjing of high quality that can be displayed at the NBPCA during the opening period at the new site.
The selected Bonsai or Penjing are usually picked up and returned by the NBPCA staff and are insured during transit and their stay at the collection.
Starting in 2012 there will be annual pickup and delivery runs to the following:-
South Australia and Victoria (mainly Adelaide and Melbourne but including some regional areas like Bendigo, Ballarat, Wangaratta, Geelong and even Hay NSW).
Southern Queensland (mostly Brisbane and Gold Coast) but could include some regional areas like Tamworth, Armidale and North Coast of NSW as far down as Newcastle.
New South Wales (mostly Sydney and Blue Mountains) but could include Central Coast, Wollongong and South Coast.
Trees from the ACT and surrounding areas can be rotated on an ad hoc basis.
Due to the high cost of transport and varying quarantine regulations in Tasmania and Western Australia there are no planned regular trips to either of these locations however Donations of Bonsai and Penjing from these areas will be assessed on a case by case basis and we do encourage bonsai artists from these regions to consider donation of bonsai. The NBPCA has proudly on display 6 fine Bonsai from WA at the moment.
We have on display a wide variety of plant material, styles and sizes of bonsai. We can accommodate quite large bonsai right down to trees of about 150mm or smaller.
If any of you have general questions also please post them here so that everyone can benefit.
We have representatives in most major population areas around Australia and I can also put you in touch with your local person.
The collection is also made up of bonsai that have been donated to the collection. Some have been donated directly by the artist or by various consortiums where the owner was unable to afford to donate a tree to the collection.
Over the next 10, 20 or even 50 years the NBPCA will be slowly building up a wonderful collection of bonsai that have been primarily created by Australian artists from local material and of course we will have the best collection of Australian native bonsai in the world.
All bonsai intended for loans or donated for permanent display go through a selection process to ensure we have a good mix of Bonsai and Penjing in the collection. The persons in the committee that select the trees for inclusion usually do not know the name of the owner of the tree; so it is purely the tree that is being assessed; meaning that all trees compete on a level playing field for possible inclusion in the display.
So if you would like to take part in the historic opening of the new NBPCA facility and you have a Bonsai or Penjing that you would like us to consider for inclusion in the display then please contact me by either of the means listed below.

Hi all southern NSW and Victoria,

I am travlling a few days early down to the Melbourne AABC Convention so that I will have enough time to view all the bonsai on offer for the NBPCA for later in the year and 2013.

If you would like me to visit to view your bonsai for potential inclusion in the NBPCA then let me know in adequate time.

I will be in and around Melbourne from Tuesday 15th May till the end of the convention.

Hi all,

I am coming up to Bonsai By The Harbour and will be viewing some bonsai on the MOnday and Tuesday for possible inclusion in the NBPCA for February next year.

If you are coming to Bonsai By the Harbour it would be a good opportunity to see me, show me your bonsai or we may be able to make an appointment for me to view your bonsai.

PM or call me if you are interested. 0418 611 488.

My trip to Melbourne was very productive with numerous bonsai and penjing on offer to the NBPCA for 2013.

Grant
