Privet - from mallsai to [hopefully] bonsai

Post by xtolord »

Hi all,
This is a mallsai I acquired in 2011, and after 1 year decided to do some drastic changes.
I had repotted it then and found a very poor root system compacted in what seemed to be some gray clay earth.
The branching was nice then, but there were several scars and bad cuts on the main trunk.

Today I had to repot it because if was getting root bound in the pot with roots leaking out of the drainage holes.
Here's some before and after shots.
I won't post the whole stuff, but for anyone interested, the whole set can be seen here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/xtolord/se ... 7796422633

Close up of the branch. I was initally going to leave the whole branch alone, but decided it was a good opportunity to try to make a jinn out of it.

The final tree so far.

Future plans:
1. Create a jinn out of the whole left cutout branch / old trunk part.

2. Allow the current green section to grow freely.

Any feedback appreciated.

Cheers X

Yesterday evening I've managed to complete the jin I was aiming for.

After

Plus a little virtual of what I have in mind.

Overall steps:
1. Allowing those two sacrificial branches to grow & thicken the upper part [ next 12~24 months ].
2. Redirect new growth in the lower part to cascade over the trunk [ As it grows ]
3. Style 3 distinct areas to create a feeling of depth when looking upfront [ As it grows ].

Im still unsure what to do with the sacrificial branches once they have done their job.
Will either cut them off or jin them too - if this current jin is still ok by then - Its my first attempt at it.
