As usual Ric, Jan, Garry and everyone (anyone else?) involved did a wonderful job organising BBTH2012. It was great to catch up with old friends and make some new ones too.
Here are a couple of shots I took...
Pat's pot making demo drew a crowd. Pat took along half his potting studio for the demo - thanks Pat!! There were more than a couple of potters closely watching and taking notes.
Mike discussed his techniques for refining Black Pines and demo'd on this very nice old Nishiki which he purchased by mail order 30 years ago. It was shipped bare rooted at a cost of 12c.
Dennis planted an Aussie native saikei and spoke in depth about his experiences with growing natives as bonsai. His discussions on soil and microorganisms was also very interesting.
Jan created a lovely saiki from some old olives that had interesting features but weren't much use as bonsai on their own.
John Marsh presented a brilliant demo showing different styling options for a Cedrus libabi. John had pre wired the whole tree and had sketch 8 different style options. Each sketch was presented and discussed then the tree was styled to match. Branches were covered with a hanky rather than being cut off. The first 7 options were 'safe and traditional' but the 8th was D Y N A M I C. A dropped head literati. This is the option that John will be further refining the tree over a couple of years to be like.
There were other demo's by Barefoot, Andrew E, Alex Bennett, Ric, Yours truly and Grant updated us all on the progress of the new NBPCA. A great weekend as usual! I encourage you to make it along next year if you can. It will be at the same venue on the same long weekend.
Regards,
Steven

Re: Bonsai By The Harbour
On Sunday, Andrew from the Central Coast gave an all day Demo on 2 trees, a large Privet and a Juniper.
the privet was laying on the side and had 2 trunks about 1 ft from the base, and one of them went and the rest became a very nice semi cascade.
The Juni lost a lot of Bark and finished with a few live veins and much more compact foliage.
Enjoy

The last series of Posts are of a demo and talk by Alex Bennet and was all about the refinement of a Juniper.
The tree was one of the family personal collection that had been let go a little for a few years and then he was starting to recover it.
Nice Demo
That is the end of my photos, but if you ever get the opportunity to go to BBTH, do so. It is a great weekend

Re: Bonsai By The Harbour
Nearly forgot
The Venue also has Sales tables Lynnette Smith, Janet Selby and Pat Kennedy, so pelnty of opprtunity to lighten the wallet while there
It worked on me as my wallet was thinner at the end of the weekend
I picked up some nice Shohin, Mame and Kusamono pots from both Janet and Lynette as I had not got any from them before.
