Where have the flowers gone?

Post by billa »

Hello Gang!

Some time ago I purchased a Japanese Wisteria. I got it from a nursery who primarily used it for taking cuttings and eventually selling them. When I bought it, it was cut down to bonsai-ish size. The first year I had it, sure enough it flowered well.

My mum liked the tree so much I gave it to her. So out of the pot and into my mums back garden it went. It has grown profusely for about a year and a half. During that time we didn't see any flowers...does anyone have any ideas why?

Also, can anyone please tell me the difference between flower buds and I guess 'leaf' buds?

Thank you :)

Plants that are growing fast put most of the energy into growth and waste very little in flowers.
When you planted it into the ground it essentially reverted back to a young, juvenile plant that needs to grow into a big one before it can mature and settle down to reproduction. After a couple of years of fast growth it should start to produce mature, flowering shoots again.

Hey Bill,

Japanese wisteria need lots of sun & constant pruning to encourage flowering, if allowed to grow freely in a landscape flowering is sparse or non existant.

I have a large one that failed to flower in the landscape for about 15yrs, after a season & a bit of constant pruning it had its first flower last november and has loads of flower buds ready for this spring.viewtopic.php?f=132&t=5475&hilit=dragon

Let it fatten up then dig for bonsai again ;)
