My old olive bonsai

It would not hurt to give the tree a feed to help it along. Dig in some fertiliser and start a feeding and watering schedule while it is still in the ground. Good potential

Hello gave the olive another trim to try to make it bud back along the branch like its been suggested not sure if i trim it back enough first time ive tried on such an old tree. The before picture is from the other day another day should have a bunch of new shoots in a few weeks

I like the design Craig came up with olive. Not knowing a great deal yet but I think it was a good idea to keep in the ground for a faster responce.

If your not sure don't do this, but i personally would take more than i originally said. Cut everything off except a few shoots on each branch, and reduce those to 2/4 leaves each. the reason i would do this is, if you leave the amount of foliage that you have now what will happen is all the new terminals will extend and result in a larger foliage mass than there is now with some back budding.. If you trim as i suggested you will not get as many new terminals and backbudding will be greatly improved. The tree will have no options but to backbud because the foliage has bee reduced so far.

Gave it another trim here are some pictures ill leave it as is for now ill check it all the time ive also taken a picture of where i hope to get some shoots

I gave it some seasol about 3 days ago i should see a burst of shoots in a few weeks. Thanks again for your help Craig i just need some confidence doing this cant wait to see the result of this ill post pictures as soon as i see shoots

Yeah ive got shoots coming now about half way back a long the branch so im very happy will take some pictures in spring as they are still very small

Great potential there Olivecrazy and a great idea from Craig... just don't waste the opportunity to create an additional tree by trying for a layer off the end prior to reducing the live vein.

I could understand if the stock had some serious potential... BUT we all get caught up in holding on to "ANYTHING" that has bonsai potential.. Im not having a dig.. just trying to wake some enthusiasts up.. have a watch of some of Graham Potter's videos and see what Im comparing "Pre-Bonsai too?"

Oh well to me it has great potential an was collected about 20yrs ago the main thing is im happy to have it in my collection. I can see potential in any tree some people cant an thats how it is i think but time will tell another 2-3 yrs of growth an i would say its at the pre bonsai stage . As for Graham Potters videos ive watched all the videos i can find that he has made an he dose great work i like it most the time the trees he has worked on have been collected many yrs before he gets them would love to have access to his material an the $100s to buy them
