Little Black Eggs

Post by BGM1971 »

Hi all
I have noticed that my maples have what looks like little black eggs on them.

I have circled a small bug of some sort. I don't know if it is the culprit or not.
Any help to rectify this problem will be appreciated.
Thanks
Brad

I would say that the little green critter has just hatched from those eggs by the look of some of the other eggs that are green. Probably something like stink bugs or otherwise related to them. Not good, :shake: I'd get rid of them.

You could start by squashing all the eggs, try a pencil, one with an eraser on the end would be ideal- to get them all, or perhaps scraping them off- taking care not to damage the bark. But as for the insects it might be a good idea to try and identify them before using an insecticide, as if you use the wrong one it may not work but possibly harm the tree and/or beneficial insects around the area.

I've had a good look but the photo is a bit blurry for me to identify what they could be, are you abke to take a close up macro shot to try and capture them? Or else just have a good look and see what they do/how they behave as different pesticides work on different types of insects (eg sucking, chewing, flying, scale etc)

Here's a link to the eco range of pest control- they have examples of different insects/pests controlled by certain pesticides (and ones which aren't harmed as well!) I think the range is sold at Bunnings and garden stores.

Hope this helps :fc:

I'm going to try to get a better picture.
This was taken with my 90mm macro lens and minimum distance, so these things are REALLY small, just lots of them!
They are not big trees. They are in trainer pots to thicken them up.
I'll see what I can do tomorrow, weather depending.
Thanks
Brad
