Quick and simple one on maple seeds

Hey guys successfully planted some Japanese and trident maple seeds last year in seed trays.
Did not stratify just put them into seed raising mix.... and had success.
Here is the memory loss bit .. I cannot remember if I put them in deep (15mm) or much shallower.
Help me please I think I might be running late.

David, if it is plain old Acer palmatum Japanese Maple then they will grow like weeds, I work at a place where they just grow on the top of the ground with leaf litter as mulch, what you might term as weed proportions.

How on earth do you expect us to know how deep you put them????

I put mine a few mm under the surface, and then my kids poke around at them over the following few weeks with various things like my torch and my toothbrush etc, so now they are probably at a varying depth. I'll let you know how it goes!

PS: The last advice I saw on the matter was cover them with a layer equal to the thickness of the seed, and then cover that with a layer of newspaper to avoid splashing it all around when watering to keep them moist.

General rule for most seed is cover with a layer equal to thickness of seed. I sow maple seed about 2-6 mm deep - just enough to cover the seeds.
Seed that is on the surface will sometimes have trouble getting the root to penetrate because there is nothing above to hold the seed down. As the root tries to push into the mix the seed moves up or back.

Thank you all I am planting/sowing today under 3mm aprox. And thank you Damian Bee for the "grow like weeds" I have to accept this ... and I thought I had done so well

In regards to where you may find maples growing in weed proportions is almost anywhere that there is a parent tree, a little shade and a reasonable level of moisture, the seedlings usually only last a year or two in Melb area with the strongest surviving beyond that.

They sprout under a layer leaves in nature so that might be rule of thumb to go by
