Mallee Root Deadwood & Living Bonsai potential

Hello gang,

I scored some mallee root FOR FREE off a friend who has a wood fire factory…

What would be some good species that I could use to create a bonsai with living and deadwood?

Are all Juniper Species ok? What else would sort of catch/integrate and mould on?

They are fairly large and of course more detailed up close

Any procumbens or sergeants would do nicely. But why not try something a bit different like an Australian native.

Hi Billa , give the guys a chance to knock off work . Plenty of good Junipers around , all you need is good compact foliage and you half way there . As brian has said try a native , Grevillea , Eucalyptus , Fig , almost anything can be Phoenix Grafted / Tanuki , if the foliage looks good and there hardy , simply give it a shot , we can all learn from trial and error .

I am using a Casuarina as a Tanuki.

Thats a good idea..I put a thread up trying to get my hands on some natives about a month or two ago in the buy,swap & sell section, but looks like no one wanted to get rid of theres at the time! Id love an aussie tree....dont think I have seen many in bonsai nurseries... me thinks its about time I read up on digging so I can actually find some good ones naturally.

the guys that run the factory are great - its a family business and they live right behind my mums over the lane-way..I used to help them unload the wood when I was a little fella...apparently mallee root is expensive so I was happy they let me wonder round and pick out some that I liked.

Now I have seen a video about it and seen finished ones at the Bonsai Farm but I had no idea of the name..thanks. Phoenix/Tanuki graft. Great. Now I can read up some more.

I have never had a fig before so that is a good incentive...anywhere in Melb I can find some good stock?
