Sequoia sempeverins - Coastal redwood

Post by Gareth »

Hi Guys,

Well today i went to check out a redwood in my sisters neighbours front yard as it had shoots coming from the base.

WELL, inbetween trying to get in between the fench and the tree trunk (about a 10 inch gap) and the shoots not having developed ANY roots whatsoever (i was hoping that the mulm and soil would cause the to ground layer and i could chop them off) i decided i would try something different.

So, i cut about five of the suckers off, along with a heap of hardwood and semi hardwood branchs (with softwood shoots on them as well) and bought them home.

The large stuff, thumb thickness and above, i have placed under plastic, in a styrofoam box filled with water, in the vain attempt to force them to strike roots, i then have about 50 cuttings in hardwood and softwood pencil thickness and less that im hoping ill at least get a couple strike roots.

Im going on the fact that people can cut redwood burls, sit them in a pan of water and strike roots and plant them out into a tree, so theres the concept with the larger wrist thick cuttings. The smaller stuff, well, im just assuming that they will take as people propagate them from cuttings all the time.
