Scale on my Juniper, how do you treat it?

Post by Pat093 »

:gday:

I went out to have a close look at my only juniper this afternoon and found white tiny little scale on the the foliage and some on the branches and trunk.
I would normally treat scale with a White oil, etc, but as i have never treated a Juniper before I thought i would ask how you guys treat this pest on Junipers?
I have read up on this in the two books i have :reading: and they mention a systemic insecticide.
What are my Options?

No oil on conifers - it clogs the stomata and can kill them. You can use a systemic or lime sulphur.

A systemic insectide is taken up by the plant and kills the bugs when they chew on it. As opposed to a contact insectide which you actually have to spary on the bugs. You could also try Rogor - it is recommended for aphids, thrips, mealy bug, lace bug and mites. Not sure if it is reommended for scale though :lost: I am sure someone knowledgeable will chime in

Do you use the confidor tablets that are pushed into the soil?

No we are diluting (1 sachet per 5 lt ) our selves and spraying it on. You will notice an improvement immediately but you have to keep it up. Im telling you this 1) of experience and 2) reccomended from the best so no worries plenty knowledge there but very happy to hear if others have defeated them otherwise. :tu: :tu:

I just use directed strengths from the bottles. what you have to make sure is that you get the eggs aswell. I depends on the cycle the scale is in. If they have laid eggs you may need to hit it again once they hatch to finish the job. The lime sulphur often gets the eggs i think though.

Rogor can defoliate certain trees for Eg. some fruiting, but it seems pretty safe and effective on conifers and a wide range of leaf trees.
