Corky bark Privet!?!

Post by MattA »

I visited a friend today & they were very excited to show me their latest acquisition, a Corky bark privet!. I have never heard of such before but didnt want to say so...

Has anyone heard of such a thing or has my friend been duped?

Privets do get a fissured/corky bark with age, I have never heard of one as a mutation or variety but I never say never as new things are being introduced all the time. Years ago I would never have thought that a ground cover crepe myrtle or camellia or casuarina would be possible. I would love to see pics of the privet.

I've seen a privet labelled at a nursery (will remain nameless) as 'corky barked privet', but laughed it off as an older tree and a sales trick. You never know tho, they do have a variegated type of privet so......?

Hack,
I will see if I can take some pics, the bark isnt like any I have seen on privet regardless of age. Not real corky like elm or jbp but definitely not the smooth bark of a young tree nor the fissured bark of really old privet. I havent heard of a ground cover crepe but now I have might have to do some research.... I have 2 different mini's as well as the normal kind so

Andrew,
I think I know the nursery ;) The tree has a bit of age but not enough to start developing bark like on that old hollow privet...

Edit... spelling

They do sell them at the Ray Nesci Bonsai Nursery. I'm not sure if it's a sport or from a collected tree but they all grow corky bark, not just aged bark. Was originally owned by one of the members from the School of Bonsai who still has one now, definitely corky bark. ;)

Sure, it's not mine though, so if the guy who owns it brings it in again I'll be sure to get a pic with his permission. They are quite interesting.
