I like this tree Ken. I think its chance of survival is very good, you have managed to retain of lot of feeder roots there.

thanks Daviet i hope they recover well too. I tried to get and keep as much fine roots as possible so
The last one that was split did not have a lot of roots so hope this one does OK

I will certainly update as we go along but will be a good few months before survival is confirmed.

Prince of Wales perhaps Ken? I have a small one and it goes that colour in winter. Not sure if they get that big though.

The colours of the foliage just dont leave me feeling confident. They dont look vigerous. I hope im wrong and it is about winter colour !!!

Ah OK.
It is only the winter foliage colour. they go this colour late in winter and then will green up again is spring. have been watching them do this for 20 odd years
is quite extraordinry actually to see so if I leave this foliage on these tress as bonsai instead of grafting shimpaku, it will be quite interesting to see.

Horizontalis usually go more golden than red, and also don't tend to grow upwards at all like these seem to have done.. As far as I know they just grow out and wide, super flat. Then again, I've never seen any super old ones haha

Juniperus horizontalis Andorra Variegata would be my guess then =]. Not 100% because the foliage looks a little different? Then again I could just be going blind from working in front of a computer 8hrs a day, then coming home and scouring ausbonsai until I want to work on a tree until 5am, then sleep. haha

Either way you will need to graft so do it good with shimp. you got maples for colour !!!

Agreed, no need to worry about the foliage type, just graft on a good/tight kiishu next year.

Great work Ken, I hope the ones you don't like will be up for sale eventually.

Keep the humidity up to them by misting and they should be fine. I like the contrasting winter foilage colour, its good to have a different type anyway. It will look good when you have them next to a shimpaku once established. Be a bit boring if they were all the same. If your in doubt about success, they grow very well up here on the central coast.....I could look after them for you
