Help with Morton Bay Fig

Post by bouquet »

Hello All

I am new to bonsai. I have been looking through the web site and I am really impressed with the amount of information, the community and help provided.

I will be attending a bonsai meeting held within the Adelaide region next month and I hope to attend some classes in the future.

I brought this Morton Bay Fig from a bonsai nursery and I would really like to hear some advice on how to turn this into a bonsai. Following are some pictures I took.

I look forward to hearing what the more experienced have to say on this fig.

Regards

Hi Boquet, nice trunk

In Adel it will still be too early to work Figs yet ( anoth month maybe), but the process will be the same as any other tree.

Cut back and then let shoot out. Select the shoots to keep and develop as branches then trina this with wire to shape. Cut back the branches when you get about 4 leaves to produce ramificationa and smaller leaves.

With a Fig you cannot go too far wrong.

Not to your tree. I woud cut back the upper trunk section to the leaf going up and then regrow a new apex from that.
Let the brnches extend out and thicken a little, then cut them back and they will then shoot out again. repeat to build the branching stucture

Thanks for your input Ken

I am going to attend a bonsai club here in SA. I will probably end up joining which will allow me to also take the tree along to a workshop.
