With other goings on I wasnt able to pick the buds off so this girl had a nice show of flowers by the time i gotg to it this w/e. The earliest blooms had all but finished with lots between that & still tight buds, the ongoing show would have been nice to watch but this was my only chance to repot before too late.
Joy1B.jpg
I didnt get any pics of the roots when collecting last year so it was nice to finaly get a look, no roots at the front but a good spread round the rest.

It has been repotteed into another clam shell, this time doubled up in the hope that it doesnt fall apart like the last one. now to let her get some growth back on before i shorten all the main branches & start regrowing them. Its been placed next to the fence so runners that need thickening can be tied to it.

Very nice Matt. Gotta love those Wisteria. Mine are only now popping flowerbuds. probably two weeks off yet. Are yours early or is this normal for your area. :?:

Vice, Its a big trunk but the branching needs LOTS of work.

Bodhi, this is about normal for up here, the earliest blooms had already about finished & leaves starting to unfurl. Last year she spot flowered right thru summer & it looks like she's already going to do the same.... New buds had already formed at the base of the just finished blooms.

Ken, I lost count around 100 & was still only half way thru pruning them off :o

Since seeing Hackimoto's beautiful Wisteria viewtopic.php?f=132&t=12815I have been trying to get a pic of this old girl, today I managed to give it a 1/4 turn & get a sheet held.
100_5245rz.jpg
Still havent got a decent pot for it yet, I have seen a couple big enough but now which one, with a price tag to match the trunk its not a decision to make lightly. Deep hexagonal pot with slightly incurved sides in a red/brown body and cream engobe decorative panels; or; medium depth oval in a dark brown body with recessed quarter panels and cloud feet... :lost: :lost: :lost:

That's a ripper Matt. I love the deadwood. Can you show us the pot choices?
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Brett, I cant find a pic of the hex pot but the oval would be something similar to this http://www.kaizenbonsai.com/shop/popup_ ... p?pID=3230 but in a dark brown body & plain panels.

If I could find something like this I would be awesomehttp://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00le ... F3052-.jpg but I have never seen one anywhere near big enough, this old girl needs a minimum width of 80cm & depth (front to back) of 70cm to accomodate the roots.

Matt, I love it, the size is very impressive. Looks like a sinensis. To get the compact flowering head of flowers you need to cut back now, about 15 to 30 cm up from where the main, thick trunk starts to narrow and it will re shoot with a lot of vigour from now until about January. Then cut the new shoots back to about 3 or 4 nodes once they have grown about a metre. Then chuck on lots of Dynamic lifter. That's if you want it more compact. I'd love to get my hands onto it, even if just to have an input into its development.

I have been wanting to cut it back hard & start developing tighter branching but at the same time quite like the natural form the decades of garden hedging has produced. Given its age & growth characteristics I would agree its W.sinensis, probably the best Wisteria for all round ease & reliability.

For me the appeal was always the deadwood, with a network of hollows extending from the top of the trunk right down thru it. My biggest concern if I start hacking & chopping is the possibility of new rot extending into the stable areas. I observe a few simple guides to help not encourage rot & so far so good.

I would be more than happy to receive input, or.... ;)

Beautiful flowers.

Have you tried a large terracotta pot for now rather than the large plastic shell?

It would be much easier to move.

Beautiful future though.

Hey Scott,
I have never come across a terracotta pot big enough, it has a permanent spot in the garden & gets turned occasionally. The clam shells work & with only a few cracks instead of drainage holes they have the added bonus of allowing me to flood the pot every couple of days :tu:

Looking good Matt. Kingston had some really big pots coming in which may accommodate the tree? I'm going to head down there this week as I wanted to try to get something for that big camellia of mine. I'll let you know what he's got. Can you PM me your number mate. I lost all my numbers when my youngest thought my phone would look good in the muddy bucket of water!! God bless her! I'll send you some photos of some when I get down there. Gotta love those flowers mate. Looks good

Andrew, thats exactly where I saw the 2 I like & that are big enough... Will text you now ;) Gotta love littluns, almost as much as pups. I was at my mentors recently & when it came time to leave couldnt find my phone, his pup had taken it to her basket for a bit of a chew... I am just thankful I have an old lowtech monster that survives such treatment :D
