Mugo Pine work

Hi,

Just a quick question, What is the best time of year to do a styling job on a Mugo?

I thought it would be now but just after some reassurance?

Hi Jezz, i have quite a number of Mugo pines its ok to work on them now but what i have found if you are doing a lot of re styling donot even think about re potting for 6 to 12 months

From info off other sites they suggest that summer is the best time for work and potting of Mugo. Vance wood who is on the BT site and also the IBC site has a lot of experience with mugos. Maybe post the same question on the IBC site.

in my very limited experience, they take well to a styling now. i have found the vance wood method works for potting with me. mid december. however if you remember mine 3 survived and kicked arse, i bare rooted them and pruned the roots too, but no new growth was cut off the top! the one i did the lot to is now over and out. walter pall stresses that when he repots his mugos in spring he hardly cuts anything off the top. does not restyle till the following year. mugo must not have both top and bottom work in the same year, according to walter. vance on the other hand tells you a very different story. i personally have taken a bit from both of them and am having great results.

Vance Wood is in Chicago, that is in a climate very different from Melbourne. It's the old story: what works in one part of the world does not necessarily work in all the others.
Walter Pall advised sommeone from the NSW South Coast, who had difficulties with his Mugos, never to have shade on the crown of these pines. That worked fine for Walter and up tp a point also at the S. Coast, where the air is humid, but it didn't work at all in the dry summers of Canberra.
Take the best advice you can get from the area where your bonsai have to live.

and like Lisa mentioned our summers are very different to that of europe and the U.S.

I saw a mugo on the weekend i wanted to purchase but didn't because of lack of knowledge on the species.
I have found Hans Van Meer's site very informative though

when the next year is quoted that doesn't necessarily mean exactly 12 months. it could be anywhere from 10 to 18 months. thats right it works for vance in his climate. if i was over in SA i would style now. providing i havent pruned back to hard, i would probably repot nov- dec. but no decandling (cutting off the new growth). if you do prune back hard and leave little growth on top then repot. this is where the tree gets into trouble. it doesnt have enogh growth on top to push it produce new roots. therefor better leving it till the follwing year. if you prefer repotting in spring just think about this top and bottom balance (not).
as walter sais junis and pines repot happier when not to much is cut off the top. i have done this last spring and summer with 3 mugo's and a juni. it worked very well on both specie. they did not miss a beat.

i would be very interested in what grant bowie might have to say on this topic. he recently styled that mugo.

Thanks to everyone who posted on here. after reading the advice I hacked a little shohin mugo up a bit and got the basic style wired in.

Keep the ideas and advice flowing as i think that mugos could be a much under estimated tree in australia.

I don't have a pine and i think it's time i popped that cherry
