Don't know much about the different varieties of Acer but this is why I was told it is when I bought it.

It looks to be one of the Acer palmatum, Dissectum, of which there are many varieties. If it is not grafted it is probably Acer palmatum variety "Atropurpureum" See what colour the leaves are in summer, if purple then it is probably Atropurpureum. These are all Japanese maples. Wai Chi is the name of a lychee variety. It might also be a cultivar of Acer palmatum but I couldn't find any record of it. Nice compact plant. :tu:

Cheers hack, If I remember correctly the leaves are dark, dark red or burgundy in summer. I will have to wait and see again this summer.

Could also be an Acer palmatum Villa Taranto... I have one in my backyard.

They have great colours and shortly i was planning to take some air layers for my next bonsai projects, however i am not sure how/if the leaves will reduce. They are very long spindly leaves.... Anyone else bonsai'd s a species like this and seen a good reduction in leaf size?
