Maple ID

Hi All,

Quick and easy one for all you maple experts. Let me know what you think this is. It is labelled as a palmatum bloodgood, but I've had contrasting advice that it is a Shishio instead. What do you think. I have only had the tree for a few days, so can't comment on what colour it is mid-summer. I believe that the bloodgood remains red, and the shishio goes more green.

It looks like a bloodgood to me. I have one and the new leaves go from that bright red to a darker red in the course of its growth. Wait and see if it changes. Let me add though that i am no expert.

Looks on the small side to me, so could be Chishio. You'll soon know - Chishio leaves green up in a month or two. Into the grow bed with it!

Hmmmm, thanks for the opinions everyone. I suspect that time will tell on this one. Now I have to decide where to plant it. The dogs and kids annihilate most of my garden bed stuff, so maybe just a slip potting for now. I paid quite a bit for it, so I need to ensure that it is nice 'n healthy. I look forward to any other opinions.

my ref has:
'Bloodgood' as: 10-12m tall, sparsely branched. leaves 5-8cm wide, 5-7 lobed, dark wine red not fading to green. Samaras glowing red. Similar vars: Flushing, Italy Red, Crimson Prince, Fireglow, Moonfire, Cristy Ann, Murakano and Red Spray.
note: Bloodgood is a common variety so lots of seedlings have been grown and some of them have been given the parent name so again we have different cultivars with the same name- very confusing.

'Chisio': Densely branched, 4-5 m tall. Leaves 4-5 cm wide, 5 lobed. branchlets and shoots thin. Brilliant scarlet when unfolding, later fading to pinkish, later bluish green with reddish margins. Chisio means 'Blood' Similar vars: Beni Maiko, Corallinum, Deshojo.

Unfortunately unless you have both vars to compare the differences may not be easily apparent and as a potted tree the sizes given will not be relevant. With so many varieties, many similar it is easy to tell what it is not, almost impossible to definitively tell what it is.

Hi guys!

I have a similar enquiry to Mr Legg..

I have two maples..the bigger red one for about 2months (center of photo)..the leaves are a crimson red and have not changed only to go darker...is it the same one as Mr Leggs perhaps?

The smaller one you can see in the photo behind the red one has recently leafed and has a red outline but mainly green leaf...

both were very appropriatley labelled 'maple' lol

I know there are very very many varieties but ontop of all the supllied info I would like to get another opinion about mine please folks

Billa, Thousands of Acer palmatum named varieties and many millions of unnamed seedlings. If yours did not come with a variety name then they are just Acer palmatum.

Thanks mate. I guess it's gonna be a case of wait and see. At a local bonsai nursery I was shown both and assuming they were correctly labelled (the owner seemed adamant that they were), then I have the Chisio as the bloodgood seemed to have a bigger leaf, and it seemed to be less intricate (if that makes sense). That said, the guy I bought it from was equally convinced that it is a bloodgood!

Time will tell!

As there is already a thread for maple ID I thought I would throw mine into the ring as well. It was old nursery stock that had been forgotten & noone knew what variety it was. First pic is current new growth, second was taken late summer.

Matt, from what I can see, that's a palmatum bloodgood. This looks very much the same as the tree that the guy at the bonsai nursery showed me to prove that mine was shishio and not bloodgood.

Matt, I suspect it might not be Bloodgood, although it's pretty bloody nice. According to Vertrees, The Bible, Bloodgood's edges are smooth, the leaf is fairly solid, and not divided so far in. I can't go through 4738 photos to find out which one it is, but a guess might be "Burgundy Lace".

Grow it big. Go crazy.

Maybe Bloodgood, maybe Burgundy Lace...the bit that doesnt fit for me is the downy new growth which I thought would make it a japonicum..not knowing is much easier

Gavin, Crazy is, crazy does...I already have big maples, this one has loads of character in the lower trunk. It has had a season in the ground to gain some vigour, next a layer or 2

hi there , i would say Shindeshojo depending on size of leaves , i have a couple of these i grafted myself about 10 yrs ago , cheers eyleene
