Hi all
I grabbed this privet from the dying area of the local nursery and saw that it was root bound.
I actually needed to cut the root ball with a hack saw to get through it then soaked in seasol for a few days to loosen up the roots. It was still a major tearing job to get it spread out though..... I know they are hardy but was i too rough?
I hope it survives!
I haven't trimmed anything as i think i may do a simple forest setting via a raft style down the track....
cheers
Stewart

Re: small leaf privet
this one should bounce back really well. I have taken 90% of roots off a privet no worries

Re: small leaf privet
Hi Stewart, the privet will be fine. You can cut them right back hard, both top and roots and they'll shoot. Semi-shade it until it recovers and It'll throw buds everywhere. They grow so quick that you may need to repot in autumn as well! Some of the older leaves may die off but don't despair as they're as hard as nails!
If the group were mine I'd cut the trees to different heights. Thickest trunk tallest etc. Perhaps even wire some trunks. You'll make a good start on the group if done now.
Cheers Andrew

Re: small leaf privet
I wouldnt call that being rough on a privet, that is quite gentle. Look forward to its progress.
