Gday folk's. I dug this unknown on Saturday from a local park and its the best nebari and root system that I have dug so far. Its diameter is 50mm above the flare but with a straight trunk which sucks.
I have cut it back to about 2ft and will decide on where to chop closer to the trunk as it back buds.
Although I am still only learning I think this has a great root system

Any advice is appreciated

Thats crazy root flare, but do you have any pics of the trees foliage for an i.d?

If it is and elm, then may i suggest a broom style tree. That way you could still use the radial spread of roots you have there.

Depends on how tall you want the tree.

for a 2 inch base, then maybe plan on 12 inch tree (6-1 ratio), so maybe the trunk will be about 1/2 the total height?
You could allow a little longer as the trunk will thicken while growing the rest of the tree too.

So around 7 inches sounds good to me, Thanks Ken should I do that now or wait for it to bud? at the moment it is around 2.5 feet long.

OK so here's an update. It turned out be an English Elm I took Kens advice and chopped it at 7inches but I cut it straight I didn't know that I had to do a V chop to develop a broom, there is always next years dig for that As you can see it has only developed 2 branches and I recon 1 has to go Otherwise it might reverse taper! am I right

Dose anyone have any suggestions on what I should do now.

You can still do broom with that
Let each branch grow and then chop each back tot he same height. Repeat as necessary to build the broom

Thanks for the fast response and advice Ken Much appreciated One last thing mate, how round at the trunk should I let them get before cutting them back?
In time I hope that I can give advice to beginners,in the meantime all I can do is admire the awesome trees that you folks grow
