Native nursery stock progressions

Post by Edward Scissorhand »

The following are just a bunch of nursery stock banksia starters that Ive had them for between 6 months and 6 years. I think I should do a progression on these, otherwise I will regret it in the future.

Interesting collection. And good to see that they will flower in the pot - it's not common.

Nice shape on the oblongifolia too - is that local to Sydney?

Do you know the botanical name of the fern-leaf? Interesting texture. Will they shoot from bare wood when you cut them back?

My one attempt at a Banksia was an aemula - it took one look at a Canberra winter, screamed out "I'd rather DIE!!!", and did. Pity.

Hi Gavin, I made a mistake up on the ID of fern leaf, I think its a hairpin (spinulosa) instead. Fern leaf Banksia is the common name for the oblogifolia. Not too sure if its just local, but they are around the blue mountains area. Yep Oblongifoilia will shoot out from the base if you cut it down, but I think at least on medium to bigger specimen.

Nice collection of Banksia you have there.

However the leaves on the one labelled as B premorsa do not look quite right. B premorsa has quite distinctive leaves. You may wish to do a to have a look at this page for a picture of the leaves:

@Stewart: nice sized aemula you got there. The mix Im using is experimental at this stage, but so far so good. It consists of pine bark (or good grade potting mix), diatomite, perlite, pumice and gravel chips.

@Dennis: Thanks for the tip, now I have to investigate it abit more. It could be leaf variations between varieties as this one is "burgundy" and also the fact that its still young. But as you pointed out, it could be an error. So I guess I will do abit more fact-finding. :reading:
