My Acer 1st pot

Post by anttal63 »

Im gonna put this up for more than one reason. 1st to show that buying an established tree can get you some milage and still put your signature on it. 2nd What can happen when you got too many trees, fall behind and start to neglect some. 3rd lets see what we can do with this. Now there are many gaps to fill in here but im just gonna have to do it on the fly as i get time .

Here it is when i first got it April 2008;

Hi Ant,
I am confused by the title.......pot?
The tree is coming along nicely, you have reached the point of development which always causes dilemnas for me.
Let the branches extend to fatten up the trunk or shorten the branches to stop them from becoming too fat for the trunk and making it necessary to regrow all the branches from scratch.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Now back here round about here at this last photo is where i should have paid attention. Putting the tree into a shallower tray would have gone a long way to slowing down the growth just for starters. No what do i do repot back into the poly box because i got some grand idea of layering so as to get a sensibly tall tree and a short stumpy one too. Not Sumo !!! Well thats fine but the next 3 years my life goes A wall and this tree is grossly forgotten. No layering, no repotting, little bit of pruning and watered to keep alive. Food if it was lucky first i had to think about feeding myself! :shock: Any ways what do reckon i end up with ???

Aprill after a much deserved prune

May last colour b4 she gets it off

and finally naked to bare all her grief

and still no pot :palm:

OK so by now you have got the drift? I have allowed the growth to get to course, allowing it to grow on too long. With that come long internodes that are useless when wanting to ramify and refine. So now i have put this baby into a cheap chinese pot just in case, how ever i am going to have a dam better crack at attempting to bring it back to some kind of order. The 2 tree option is still on my mind, that branch is hiding at the back and i will keep it a mystery for now. Finally Gerard heres my Acer in its 1st pot. :clap: :clap: :clap: I will work further on it soon ! :fc: :tu:

To chop or not to chop that is the question, :lol: :lol: :lol:

Somewhat better than it was after a clean, pinch and wire. But had one of those , whats Pup callm ? Oh bugger moments :lol: and broke a front branch clean off just as i was wiring my last brach and thinkin how good am i to get all this wire around tender maple growth :palm: That branch would have gone a long way to fillin in where mostly needed. Lets see what happens in the next 6 weeks. :tu: :tu: :tu:
