Acer palmatum varieties

Post by shibui »

The Japanese maples in the garden and in the bonsai pots are coming into leaf. there is a huge range of variation in leaf types. Here are a couple of the seedlings I have grown.

Note the (insignificant) flowers on these trees.

Lovely difference there
Are they all from the same seed stock.
the dissected leaf on is real nice, are you going to propagate that on by cutting?

Brilliant Shibui,

I am intrigued by the lime green one. can we see it fully opened please?

You cant call the flowers insignificant. I love maple flowers however short the flower period may be.

KC, These would be from different seed stock collected in various places over the past 15 years and so all have different genetics. I also have quite a few others that have different attributes though not as striking as the 2 pictured.
Unfortunately, A. palmatum from cuttings is one of the few that constantly frustrate me by refusing to strike. Maybe I should try some different techniques to try to crack a reliable method???

Squizz, I will try to remember to take some more pics as this develops. I did post this one in autumn colours a few months ago in one of the auumn threads. During the summer the leaves darken to a 'normal' green.
