Golden Duranta - Cheap Nursery stock

Bought this today from the bargin bin section, I'm not to sure how well it will fair but for $2.50 I though it would be worth a try. It had nice thick trunk movement but didn'y lookt to be in the healthiest state. It was fairly root bound and dry when I found it but was still pushing out some new growth.

I've never worked with this Duranta before but was informed they are pretty hardy species. I hope so anyway

Plans are to crea a nice thick shohin. Anyway I hope that this little one kicks through, Its had two godd 20min soaks in Seasol and now sitting in the shade.

Great buy for $2.50. I am playing around with a few - I like them but they don't seem to be popular

I was wondering the same thing, I did a bit of a search on them as bonsais and not a lot came up. How many do you have going at the moment, are there any characteristics of the tree i should be aware of. Being a popular hedge plant I amsuming it will bud back fairly easily so hopefully if it survives the shock of the root prun I will have ample leaders and brenches to choose from. One think I had noticed is that the developed branches were fairly stiff and brittle but I wasn't sure if that was due to the fact that it may have been slightly dehidrated and neglected for a while?

very nice Chris, how did it go with transplanting and cutting back of the roots?

I really like the double trunk, especially when the crwon widens out to the right. Nice find

I think they would make great bonsai candidate. They have small leaves, compact growth, and lots of vigour.
And it's a great looking trunk you have on that one!
I've been meaning to try them out for ages. There was a great one at the nursery I work at in the bargain bin with an excellent trunk, I left it there because I didn't think anyone would buy but then when I went to get it after clearing out a few trees the boss said he sold it

Ryan, the harder you cut these back the better they like it. They are also great for creating deadwood features as the wood is very hard.
