What is the difference? Japanese VS Generic wire cutters

Hi,

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on what is the difference between Japanese bonsai style wire cutters and generic wire cutters you would get from a non-bonsai hardware store. I have been happy with generic wire cutters for the best part of two decades - but they are getting a bit worn and the time has come to replace - is there a good reason to get the 'real-mccoy''?

And if so could you recommend a brand and supplier?

A pair of bonsai wire cutters will not cut into the branch/ trunk like a pair of side cutters can. I find them much easier to use and hold in my hand. Any pair will do but you do get what you pay for

the cutting blades extend right out to the end of the jaws so that they will cut wire laying up agains the trunk or branch without damaging it.

I used side small cutters for about 20 years
then i bought some cheapish chinese bonsai wire cutters

they are great,
had them about 3 years
they are good for getting close to the branch
but they also seem to hold on to the clipped bit so you can brush it into your hand or a bin etc

I spend good coin on branch cutters and knob cutters but they last about 5 years
as long as you don't try to cut too big the wire cutters should last aswell

The big difference with Japanese wire cutters is that the wire wont suddenly bend off at angle just before breaking. Most side cutters/plier combination will cause this, which can damage a thin branch.

I must be pretty easy on my tools cause I can get 20 years out of a branch cutter. Wire cutters last for several generations.

Biggest difference is the length of the handles allowing easier access to wiring further into the body of the tree. I've always just used a set of side-cutters up till I got mine and they worked fine. Just grind off the tip so the cutting edge goes to the end. Reach was the only real gain for me.

Clean sharp tools used properly last. I use them just about every day. Japanese Kaneshen.

Still using them after 27 years.

I also have other tools still not used in a leather roll.

I have to admit that I do own a pair of wire cutters, they are made in Japan but I bought them at a market for $1.00 about 20 years back. They still cut just fine but are probably something you would find in a sparkles toolbox not a bonsai kit
