Mugo Pine.. the progression story

This is one i am working on at the moment. Itis a work in progress and will take another ten or so years to be something.

Bodhidharma the needles looked very different from first pic to others.. is this bcoz of pruning?

Can u elaborate your wiring method? I noticed you had quite abit of gear on in the last photo?

Its needles have been cut to keep the vigor on the tree and the two year old needles have been taken off. This creates back budding and makes wiring a lot simpler. You have to do a lot of wiring to achieve what it is you require from the tree.

Well here is a little update to my rogue Mugo.

After I have somewhat treated the rot area, it seems to be progressing along quite nicely with good back budding and as the candles started to pop I decided that it was healthy enough to cut back (Doh! should have taken photos!)

This Mugo has had me studying it for a very long time (probably half of that time was just clueless looking) to work out the styling and now I think I have limited the options to 1 with 1 being backup so a handy second eye would be great (Antman )

I have included a recent photo and the plan here is opting for a 4 trunk clump style (photo isnt great)

I will get advice whether this is the best front as I have another angle.

Antonio since I have reduced (for the second time this year) a good amount of foliage.. I'm not so confident it will survive another major work being repotting.

(I just couldn't help myself once the pruners came out as I know I was supposed to wait )

I ended making it a 5 trunk because I heard 4 was in some cultures

I managed to resist wiring for now which was very difficult as my fingers were and are still very trigger happy

No prob Speci your tree your deal !!! With repotting pines its a case of how many candles have you got left?, how strong can they push? It does look like its travelling well and you may just have stopped the rotting process or at least slowed it down.

thought i'd post the progress of my mugho pine. it was bought from a friend in 2000. lost two branches due to a new fertilizer which burnt the roots. Not knowing what to do, so i took it to Hiro's critique in 2006. Hiro suggested that the tree was too full for the style(exposed root). so it was chosen to be in the demonstration where only the second branch was used and fully wired and the rest cut off.
the tree was forgotten for six years as far as rewiring and repotting is concerned. the new growth is thinned out every year and it was finally being repotted into a pot that Hiro suggested this July.

the whole foliage mass will be rewired in time, to give it the defined look that Hiro had envisioned. i am hoping by this time next year it will be very similar to Hiro's drawing.

Wow Very nice Mugo Tien.. how old is it and how long have you had it in training?

I do like where you are going with this as it has an abstract feel about it.

On looking at the second photo, I can envision a very nice tree with just the current branch you are using and the apex top.. still great Mugo either way!

Antman I have added a photo of the back budding and am very tempted to re-pot to get the new workable angle right.
If you near sometimes maybe you can view what angles you'd work.

Bodhi thanks for the encouragement as for a very very long time of just observing.. I cound't see any pleasing angles or branching to work with.. its slowing coming.
