AZALEA
Collected a couple of months ago from a seriously 'hardship' garden with atrocious soil, no water and no care. The plant naturally suffered dieback and I think it would have curled up its roots entirely left to that situation for much longer. It was removed with a nice chunk of functioning roots and repotted in good soil with sufficient moisture to give it a new lease on life. At this stage - two months after collection - every branch is shooting with vigorous, healthy shoots. There's several years in development but the base stock plant offers some interesting scope. It is lucky that azaleas do better in deeper pots because the two 'prong' roots could be a problem otherwise. There is some deadwood on it but that can be removed or incorporated into the design. Each side offers a 'front' possibility depending on the vision of the stylist.
The flowers are lovely and in proportion to the size of the tree. The plant, despite the horrid ground it was growing in profusely flowered this September. In time it should present a wonderful carpet of flowers over the structure as it learns that its new life offers sufficient moisture, food and care for optimal growth.
