Chaemycyparis lawsoniana..great little subjects as Bonsai
This is a little (230mm) tree that responds well to Bonsai culture in a short while. A good subject for someone who wants a minimum fuss tree that can present itself well within 5 years with good food and watering habits.

Quick question if you wouldn't mind - can you clip the foliage without it browning off?

Good subject indeed Bodhi.
To answer that question, I think it's easier to pull the foliage with a little twist to reduce it

Hi ya Watto, you can scissor cut at the branch line to reduce foliage but finger pruning the tips is what i do to keep its shape. I have never scissor cut the foliage so cant answer that one. Once the tree starts to brown off at its tips it is usually terminal and unsaveable so i have never been game to scissor the tips.

Hi Bodhi, Lawson's Cypress? Personally I have little faith that this species is capable of producing the branch definition that in my opinion is needed to make good shohin. I mean compared to Shimpaku, Squamatas and ProNanas, Cedars, JBP, Larch, Hinoki (there is maybe 3 good Hinoki in this country and a multitude of poor ones) this conifer is a fair way back in the pack as far as bonsai go.
At least that's what I think anyway.
Cheers,
Mojo

So..that means..you dont like it Moj
It is perfect for a lazy Bonsai'ist who does not want to develop future masterpieces, and look at it over a beer on Sunday afternoons and not pay an arm and a leg for a Bonsai.. I deal with them every day.

Hi bodhi love the tree, sounds like a perfect beginners bonsai-if you finger pinch the foliage and not cut.
Are they as slow growing as something like the hinoki cypress?
