Triple trunk Elm..First ever serious wiring.

Post by bodhidharma »

I collected this Elm five - six years ago And have concentrated on just keeping it alive. The middle trunk died which was a shame so i had to phoenix graft on another trunk which was fortuitously growing at the base. Ulmus procera sucker madly and will grow around dead wood but once the main trunk dies off they dont come back. If you look closely you will see that the graft has adhered beautifully. The trunks came out off my secret Hunting ground and the forest itself is 80 years old. The reason why they are so gnarly is because they have slashed them so many times but they keep coming back. The branching is now enough to make selection and wire. the deadwood alone makes this tree worth working on but it has trouble producing branches so manipulation and branch extension to fill in the gaps is necessary. Anyway i hope you enjoy this future stunner.

Very nice Bodhi
Can't beat a good hollow narly trunk of an EE for bonsai.
Can't wait to see the potted final result.

Your secret hunting ground must be a gem of a spot ...
You've got some of the best EE projects I've seen in Victoria

Bodhi, nice material. Have you thought about standing it up a bit and using the back as the front. It would then have the trunks coming towards the viewer instead of leaning away.

Hi Meagi, i believe this is exceptional material and i reckon five years of attention to detail should present this tree well.

They did me too C.K but if you keep at it you will have great material like this to.

G,day C.R, i reckon this tree will change many times before it hits a Bonsai pot and i am thinking along the lines of what you presented. The tree, at the moment, is leaning away as i have buried the back deeper to try to improve rootage. Things will change.
