Fig unearthed after two years of super feeding.

Post by bodhidharma »

This two year project is starting to come together and would have been quicker if not for our cold winter this year. A representation of a tree hanging of the edge of a cliff. I,ideally, would like the tree to completely swallow the top half of the rock and have the section below it (left hand) exposed. it is a large rock and will look the goods if i can pull it off. I might have a tree to enter into the A.B native comp for a change, that is, if this fig is an Aussie native. I think it is Ficus macrophylla but dont know which variety. Hopefully a fig expert will i.d it for me. :tu:

Great post Bodhi, I am sure the work and the wait will give you some wonderful results.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

:tu: I will update the branching progress but we will have to wait another couple of years to see how the roots are bonding.

It has been awhile since i paid any attention to this project as it was put up the back and in a poly tunnel and promptly forgotten about :lost: It was just fed and watered for a few years but i have just defoliated it and it has given good branching and is roaring back.

Hi Bodhidharma ..how excellent is it to forget about a tree and then find it happily going about it's business 8-) just wondering if you have considered tilting the rock to the left and making the apex your first branch, or is that me being ridiculous :palm: don't worry, my missus gives me strange looks to :palm:

Hi Bodhi,

this reminds me of a Ruby fig that I obtained a long time ago from our very own Pup. At the time the tree was only about 8" tall and positioned on top of a small rock approximately 1/2 the size of a house brick.

At the time I wanted to accelerate the root growth so I just planted it in the garden. As is sometimes the case time got away from me and I left the tree just growing un-trimmed in garden. Some two years later I dug up what was now a fairly significant side tree that was well over grown and desperately in need of a severe cut back.

When I dug the tree up I was amazed to find that the rock had been completely encapsulated by the trunk of the tree, so much so that when I "flat bottomed" the trunk there was no sight of the rock whatsoever. To this day the rock is somewhere within the base of this trunk.

Cheers,

Jeff
