Juniperus Squamata?

Post by BonsaiJamie »

Hey everybody,
Today Ive scored myself a little stock tree (I think its Juniperus Squamata? didnt have a tag so im not sure) and spent the afternoon chopping him up and having a go at making it into a bonsai tree.
Its a little "top heavy" I think, if anybody has any tips/advice on how I could make this tree flow and look a little more balanced, and anything Ive done right/wrong it would be greatly appreciated.
Heres a few pictures:

I reckon that if you repotted and root pruned along with taking off that much foliage at tis time of year, then i doubt it will survive :palm:
The clump at the end of the long trunk does not look right. it needs thinning out at the top more and preferrably branches and foliage along the trunk.
I would wait till it recovers in 6 months, then probably chop back to the first branch and making the tree out of that. That way you will at least have some taper in it.

Unless the artist is very experienced and knowleagable, there is no such thing as a bonsai in a day. they take a lot more then grab a tree and a pot and getting stuck in :imo:

Hi Jamie,

The Gold Coast Tweed bonsai societyies meeting in February is for the new members of the club that joined at the recent show and received a juniper. We'll be teaching them how to care and style this type of tree. It's a way off, but if your tree survives, come along with your tree and get some advice. Let me know if you'd like more details.
