White bugs

Can anyone tell me what these are ?
Are they harmful to English elms ?
At the moment that is the only place they are hiding .... Only came out in today's 30 heat wave .... Don't really want to start spraying foliage without knowing what is harmful to plants

hey Meagi, Thrifts they are every where at the moment i dont spray specifically for them cause they ll be back 2moro however i do spray religiously every 3 weeks for the hell of it. Its called prevention !!!

I had them identified as whitefly in my thread.
Thrift is a new one to me but I trust that someone is right!

The whitefly recipe on that link and the pesticide I bought have done little to get rid of them at this stage!

They seem to favour a few species and to date have only inflicted little damage - next to nothing on my English Elms.
Just makes some of the leaves of those they attack unsightly.

Ant must mean Thrip rather than Thrift!

Personally I just purchased a sticky yellow sheet which is apparently good for both thrip and whitefly.

Seeing the sheer number of the little buggers spraying everything is going to be nigh on impossible for me..
It appears they are infested in next doors tree's as well!

A few strategiclally spaced strips for prevention makes some sort of sense.

Sorry guys Thrips is the name i meant to say, However Hacki could be right and they are white fly.
I spray heavy duty, malathion, rogor and confidor. night times, dog stays indoors !!!

I've got millions of these little buggers eating everything in sight as well (I mean millions, you get a mouth full if you open it outdoors in my backyard.) I'm not sure, from descriptions of thrips and white flies I found elsewhere, that either is the correct name, but there are so many variations of similar species and common names used differently regionally who knows.
I'm not sure spraying heaps of insecticide where my kid plays is what I really want to do, and I suspect as many as I kill with any method would then immediately hop over the fence from next door anyway. I think I need something that repels them and makes them want to be some place else.

The only real solution is in my opinion to put a net over the top of ones trees.
The yellow sticky sheets i bought are next to useless.
So is the insecticide stuff that I have been using...

Absolutely agree with what you say in that even via spraying and killing those that are directly on ones plants there are just so many in the area that they will be back again in no time...

Around my area they are everywhere and well established at the local nurseries, bunnings etc as well.
Word I have from people is that..

* They are more abundant due to perfect weather conditions this year.
* That they will die off soon as the weather continues to heat up..

Fingers crossed for point 2..

Hey, they are much easier to photograph when dead! or examine at all for that mater:

The marks are millimeter marks on a ruler.

They look like tiny grasshoppers! They have the same huge jumping back legs anyway. I'm not an entomologist, but I believe the big jumping back legs rules them out as either whitefly or thrips. They do behave a lot like whitefly is described to behave though. I have been unable to spot any pupa on the plants either, makes me wonder if their life cycle involves there pupa stage being underground or something like that?

Any entomologists on the forum? what are these things?

Upon closer inspection...
I do indeed think they are the same thing!

I can't imagine how anyone else in inner Melbourne is not being infested with these?
If you're not..... what are you doing different? Or using?
