Pot belly fig cuttings

Post by Jester »

Hi there crazy kids!!!!

Some time ago I was given a pot belly fig (I think it's a banyan - ficus retusa). I have decided to use it as a cuttings tree. My questions is, when is the right time to take cuttings? I am in Kellyville, Sydney. More importantly, does anyone have any good recommendations for techniques for this species as well as media mixes.(I think I have heard that you generally use a reasonable amount of sand)

Many thanks

John

Hi John!

I've just now had a look at some ficus cuttings I took and planted about 1.5 months ago, I experimented with a few different mixes and using/not using root hormone.

Out of the 100 or so I planted out, the 20 or so that took off and are looking awesome were all planted in a local bonsai nursery's standard bonsai mix, without the use of hormone.

Not sure if that's any help, just my discovery for the day!

Pot belly fig cuttings

Hi jester figs are the only plant I have 100% success in! Mine get planted into whatever soil I have lying around/left over. Some get hormone some don't. Kept watered me partly shaded all have struck. Some thin. Some thick.
