Cedar Challenge

Well with all the knowledgeable people here i thought i might throw out the challenge . Sorry i have no cash for a Prize but i might be kind enough to throw a Cedar your way you would have to twist my arm ,won't be one of these but it will be a cedar . These are just a few hanging around the yard along with another 50 -60 odd

Pick the odd ones out ?. I have taken a group pic then followed by a close up in order from left to right , in all fairness colour means nothing as they have been growing in differnt light and positions and my camera does lie when it comes to colour

Hey Alpine, the difference in the 2 species is palpable but I am not sure what your trying to show, except that you don't prune your deodars often enough

PS: I will get a close up pic of the branching in my littllun to show what they can do...

High MattA mate i do prune them often enough , dragged them out for a work over . Can you tell me who are the odd ones out ? ,These are just trainers , some set last year from normal upright nursery stock.

1 & 5 from the left are atlantica.. the deodars growth has extended much further than it should be allowed, my pics will show what you get when you pinch & prune constantly...

Now to try & get this damn digi to work properly

Well its obvious that nobody wants a free Atlas Cedar so i will have to keep them all , can't give them away , guess i will sell have to sell them elsewhere .

O.k Number 5 is an Atlas cedar all the rest are the odd ones out . Yes that's right , number one was the weakest of the 6 nursery Cedrus Deodara's given to me back in 2009 , it had 2 leaders so i pulled the down and wound them around a bamboo stake as per the others only it has been grown horizontal , wired with a 200mm piece of wire to prevent the center fork from splitting , tipped once , needle plucked once .

The rosette growth is far superior and smaller averaging 15mm needles very close to an Atlas Cedar the big pot grown cascades and informal uprights however the trunk is half the thickness but no reduction in the 35mm needles , as for the trunk its a draw back as a result of the different method but rossette/needle reduction is a bonus. A method i have trialed for a few years now , even an amateur like me has a secret or two , actually its just a different approach to what other novices and expert alike say you must do , every Guru and Master all over the globe has a secret or two as well .

I will now allow the others the privileged of playing catchup this season and when the do they too will be bigger , however i don't think the rosette's will be as small as the Number 1 trainer . I will alter the course in growing 1 of each "cascade and informal upright" this winter to see if i can reduce the rosette/needle size

I'll give them another couple of seasons and i will compare the growth and foliage of all the 6 trainers

In truth alpine I know next to nothing on anything bonsai and nothing at all on cedars. The only thing I do remember is their is a spiecies called Atlas cedar. Never thought to even mention it though. But I do need to get one at some stage so let me know when you do want to move one on. Or maybe 2-3 as I'd like to keep one alive atleast. My father named me Atlas after one of his best mates who did a few days before I was born wrapped his bike around a tree. My mother named me Jason though and I have mostly gone by it. But its a tie to a tree I feel I need to explore.
