swamp cypress potting question

Hi all,

I recently purchased a swampy (abouut 100 mm base) from the local nursery and love the trunk on it... however it is planted pretty deep in its nursery pot and the top soil is quite firm so i couldn't investigate the roots very much.

I'd like to see what the nebari is doing before I get too far in planning to style this tree, so can i give it a good solid repot now (after it cools down a bit)? or should i wait until next spring?

Hi Ces , mate i wouldn't be too eager to repot . I have killed a few smaller ones a few years back tackling the roots when in foliage . Cut the pot down and simply scrap the solid soil away for a wee peek at the root mass . If you slide it out of the pot you will be able to see the roots growing around or down , most certainly wouldn't be doing anymore .

Well at least wait until it gets cooler than it is now. Being in gods country the swampies up here never go dormant - so I repot them any time of year. Odds are the roots are a twisted mess heading staright down - they always are on swampies. You may have to consider a ground level layer if they are really bad

Well there you go , i have just learned something new . Bougy Fan , come pick my swampies up and grow them all year round then you can return them well they are developed . Do they continue to grow all year round and never shed the foliage ,or shed and continue to grow . Very curious that's all , never have too much knowledge between the ears , might move up there one day .

Too many cockroaches and mexicans up here already Some get a bit of colour up here and some do shed but others don't. I just avoid repotting when it's really hot but I still lose a few. Every time I pot one up I severely prune the roots as they are awlay a mess. Sometime I prune too hard

G'day Ces you should have a look on IBC ( Internet bonsai club) . If you search for a thread by gjeanangel titled Bald Cypress Progression in the progresions section( sorry I don't know how to link threads). There are some great videos ,good info and some I wish stock on show.

thanks for the replies. I'll have a look at those threads when i get home sno. cheers for those.

at the moment i'm leaning toward cutting the pot down and scraping some soil. but we'll see how that changes after some more reading and a fresh view in the morning.

i repotted mine in the middle of the heat and has now fully recovered and a lot better than before.
though my first and maybe my last thread on this forum did not have any response, i am now happier having a real and very old bonsai.
Check the thread anyway.
