Systemic pesticide application

Post by Gerard »

Some people are loathe to use pesticides but my attitude is kill them before they kill my trees.
Rogor has become difficult to buy because of its toxicity, this confuses me!
Isn't it supposed to be poisonous?
I am curious about application. I have always mixed it with clensel and sprayed the foliage.
Today I read an article which suggested to apply systemic pesticide directly to the soil.
This makes some sense but which method will be most efficient?
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Hi Gerard I use it both ways foliage and some into the soil. I find this works well. The only trees I do not use systemics on is Chinese elms, as they drop their Leaves, I can get and use Rogor. I am at the moment trialling the Confidor pellets. They supposedly feed the plant as well as protect them.

I am trialling on two of my trees that I have more trouble with scale, at the moment no scale. Will let you know how we fare. I am trialling it on a Ficus and a Cycas revoluta.

Pup Cheers :reading:

Hey Pup can you give a little more detail on the confidor pellets I did a search but can't find them? Sounds too good to be true.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Look up Garden City Plastics website they sell a product called Initiator Insecticide, you can either buy container containing 300 0r 1200 tablets for a fraction of the price of Confidor Tablets it is the same chemical as confidor called Imidacloprid.
I have been using them in my Orchid pots and Bonsai for a year or two with great results.
I cannot afford cofidor tabs at approx 15bucks for 8 I think. :imo: :tu2:

Hi Gerard,
I too am a fan of Rogor simply because it seems to kill all the nasties that impact on my bonsai. I have always used it as a foliage spray as I was told the soli neutralises the chemical when in contact.
This season however I have used Confidor as a preventive spray and I think the results are good (so far anyway). The only trees I don't spray are the plum trees as I like to eat the fruit and as a result the leaves are showing signs of insect damage.
I have no trouble buying the product (Rogor) and quite often I buy the spray cans (probably because I'm a bit lazy) and find they are equally effective - a bit more expensive but effective.
Give me a PM if you want me to get you some and I will send it down.

I emailed Richgro who used to manufacture Rogor. They no longer produce the product, hence why it is not on shelves.

I dont know what to use for white pine mite now as Rogor was the only thing that had a decient effect on them......

Ideas?

I tried the confidor tablets on a juniper that has some scale and they seemed to have little to no effect, so i sprayed with Rogor and they were gone in days.

Rogor, you will be missed.

Hi All,
We've been using Rogor as well as Confidor with good results - Confidor can be used even if rain is on its way! However, both products are now hard to get in spray cans - Bunnings used to have both, but no longer ... environmental issue! They've stopped stocking any spray cans, the only place now is the new chain of Masters who still stock them both! Just wonder for how much longer?
Cheers, Rudi

Interesting as I've used Confidor recently a bit on my Chinese Elms and no leaf drop so far......?
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful
