Re: Large collected Lilly Pilly
Hi Bretts , it was planted out 13-14 years ago, possible trimmed once in the ground then forgotten .It is 2.5 m high but has a sucker 3.0m high , the trunk is around 120mm with a base around ground level of 150mm, leaves are max' 50mm on average 35-40mm and slightly smaller then marble size fruit unlike the street scape trees here . It has been growing in sticky red clay with no fertilizer , watering or trimming during its garden stay .Cheers Alpine

Re: Large collected Lilly Pilly
I know it is early days with this one Bretts, but how is it going? Has the trunk burst with new shoots and is it now growing well?
I was also wondering if you have pruned back some of the bare branches that you left on after collection now that you have new growth?
So I guess I am trying to ask if you are just letting the growth go at this stage (letting it recover after collection), or are you doing some shoot/branch selection even if minimal?
Cheers, Dario.

Hi Dario
It has lots of new shoots but they are mostly still very young and I haven't touched it again but I did take a little more wood of than pictured in the original collection I think. I will get a pic when I get back in a few days. One night stop over at home today

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Snapped a quick pic of this one for you too Dario. Would be a good time to start moving it back into full sun I think. If only I could find the room

Wow Bretts, that is bursting with new shoots! I haven't seen any larger/older Lilly Pilly's in person such as this, and I really like the detail of the aged bark on the lower trunk!
This is going to be a ripper, thanks for the pic!
Cheers, Dario.

Re: Large collected Lilly Pilly
Collected just over a year ago it was now time for some decisions, I decided to get rid of more wood for a more classical design.

Strong growth... Mine are just pushing out another flush of growth with this warm weather.... Are you going to trim?

Re: Large collected Lilly Pilly
Hi Brett,
I remember seeing this tree back in 2011 when you collected it and thinking what a nice piece of raw material it is. Nothing has changed since then, but I have to ask whether you will remove the oversize branches and start fresh. To me the first and second branches are already too heavy and I could easily argue that number one is poorly located too. On vigorous material such as this, if you were to regrow branches from scratch, you could potentially have a tree that features a beautiful flowing trunk with very good taper, without the distraction of blocky, overly heavy primary branching. It's taken 16 years for the trunk to reach that stage and 2 years in recovery for it to get where it is now.
Surely 4-5 years making potentially great primary and secondary branches is a worthy investment and something that you are easily capable of.
I hope that you give this your consideration.
Cheers,
Mojo
