First Collected Privet - Hope it surives

Post by Ryan1979b »

Hey all,

Just a quick posting of the privet I collected today. I found a nice stash of them around 100m from my house in a shruby creek area. This is the first privet I have collected and styled, I know they are pretty hardy so I'm hoping it will pull through OK :fc:

It was a pretty hard dig, its fairly heavy clay around my area and being dry it was pretty hard to get through. It looks as though it has plenty of surface roots, thats in my advantage. I probably could have chopped back the roots a bit more but being my first I thought I will give it a little to bounce back with. It had a good 30min soak in Seasol while I made the pot then another 30min soak once it was potted. I now have it in almost full shade and time to let it rest. It took a bit of a beating when digging it out and cleaning the roots up. I gt of as much of the clay around the roots as I could but it was pretty tough work, hopefully it will be OK.

I think my overall styling will be to cut out the middle (phallic looking) brack and create a twin trunk. Each major brach will create two leader from a V iff all goes to plan, I will put a vert up if I find a bit more time.

Anyway here it is:
The Pot is 450mm x 500mm x 100mm deep

Hey all,

Quick update on my privet, I got my new micro Die grinder and it works awesome so I decided to give it a bit of a go on the privet. It has bounced back awesome so I gave it another reduction and an initial carve.

I still anticipate a few more carve session in this one but I wanted to get the gerneral layout done then wait to see what new shoots it pushes out. I will probably put hollow through to the back on the Left carving and quite possibly cut back the right hand trunk to the top of the hole so the trunk splits into two. All I need is a lower branch to form om the right and I will be fine :fc: The left carves connect but its hard to see in this picture so thats something I will fix in the next few carving sessions.

Anyway a few pics

First Collected Privet - Hope it surives

Hi mate, I don't know what it is about privet and people not wanting to comment on them but I'll give you some feedback.

That looks like a nice specimen, you could make a nice twin trunk tree out of that, and I was surprised to see so many surface roots when you dug it.

These guys love fertilizer, I have found though, that when they get root bound and don't get enough water, they will suffer, mine started to yellow off a bit, reported it and its started to come back. Nice tree mate, how bout some close ups of the branch development?

Cheers Gareth,

Thanks for the tips, I definitly need to reduce the pot size and I think I will cut back hard next summer. I'll probably give the tree another month or so to see what new shoots come through and start wiring main branches from there. I think My first vert is way off what I'm looking at doing now. I still agree with the twin trunk and I think I will carve the middle trunk into deadwood and the surface roots are very compact which I will try and thin out oin my next re pot.

Not sure if people dislike privets but I think they are great for bonai, there hardy, rapid growth, easiliy back bud, small leaves, but I'll guess I will have to work with them more myself to find out if I fully fully them. I know they are a weed around most places but still a fun tree to play with :tu:

Cheers

I think the problem up your way is they are prone to dieback. For no reason the will kill off a bit of themselves and produce more suckers. Maybe it is their way of surviving, always regenerating new growth. My friends in Maroochy have this problem all the time and have lost interest in them. it has been ongoing that they create a design and then, for no reason the tree dies back whilst producing an enormous amount of suckers.

Cheers Bodhidharma,
That makes a lot of sense to why they not used much, I guess I will have to wait and see. Its always disapaointing when you put a lot of effort in collecting caring and styling and the you get die back for no reason at all. I know there prone for root suckers but didn't think that they would effect the tree in such a way.

Anyway fingers crossed and see what this tree has install for me. do You think it is a spewcific climate related issue or just the species in general?

Cheers
