One of my fathers trees, unfortunately been a little neglected of late.
It has been hot in the evenings where this tree lives and I've only seen a few pics of foliage, but I suspect sunburn.
Little help please.

I think its an insect problem. You could give it a spray with Confidor (my recommendation) or if you are against pesticides, leave it until leaf drop in a couple of months.

Re: Sunburn or worse?
Has this tree been misted frequently in the heat? and what water source is used?
The white residue around the margins of the leaf look a bit like possible mineral residue left from water evaporating.
Photos are not clear enough for an accurate diagnosis so I'm only floating possibilities.

Re: Sunburn or worse?
My guess is Thrips. Look on the back if the leaf, if they are there you will see small dark brown /black insects that are about .5mm wide and 2mm long at most (even that may be too generous).
Is the damage recent?
Also, if it is not recent then the Thrips may have moved on, I have this on some of my maple which are on shaded positions but it has not effected the health and the tree will not be on show in the near future so I won't be spraying.
If it were scorching then the leaves would have turned brown and would be pushed off by new ones.
That's my
