English elm question

Last week in Melbourne we had some cool weather this week it's been hot as .
Crazy weather pattern ...
This is one of my advanced EE it seems to be turning autumn colors already is this normal ??



Reason I ask is none of my other EE are turning ... This is an old and very mature tree my others are young does that make a difference ?

Wish I could help, but I've only grown Chinese elm, not English plus being in North America, my thoughts on seasons and timing wouldn't be the most relevant anyway. Have you done a thorough search for pests and such? Probably, just throwing it out there.

My Chinese elm did the same at start of summer then regrew thicker than ever

This year autumn isent exsisting for AT LEAST another fortnight. This heat wave in Vic is unprecedent! ive have 10 days about 30 so far and no relief till next weekend when a cold front should move through. it will get several days about 35 until than I had 3 night at 8 b4 that and did see a tinge of colour on my maples but this will end that. I think im looking into moving to Canada- greencard anyone

And to answer your question it could be the trees response to that few days of cool night or it could be too much water- unlikey atm, lack of light in that area, if it continues to yellow take note than but atm nothing to worry bout I think

thanks Matthew i have moved it out in to more sun .. and will ease up on the water .. i water my trees only mist in morning and a soaking in the evening .

its funny only back of tree is mostly effected .. with a little on the front side turning yellow .

also notice my big chinese elm has 4-5 leaves turning color and it to is an older tree .

all my other trees are under shade cloth .

my EE raft is only 2 meters from this big tree and only gets afternoon sun and its fine .
guess i will have to wait it out and see whats takes place .

i have also started to rotate my trees 180 degrees every second day ...as i notice a lot of bonsai trees are not as good on the back as they are on the front .. to me should be classed as a fault .

I have just noticed an elm forest of mine doing something similar, so I'm going to get it out in the sun, Superthrive it, and let it dry out a bit. I think mine was getting too much shade, and may have been staying too wet. Could also just be that time of year I guess!

its been very humid down here in Melbourne trees are not soaking up the water like they should i don't think as i mist in the morning and soak at night and even in afternoon after morning mist soil is still damp looking . very humid at 300 am waterings as well and tree's soil is still wet ... so i just mist the foliage .

I have English Elm as bonsai ans a chinese elm and two weeping elms in the garden; Although all collected from the same wild patch, some of my bonsai are starting to turn and some are not (I attribute this to position), the chinese elm is green as, and the weeping elms turned butter yellow a while back and have now lost half their leaves.

While we're having warm weather this week (28 - 30 max) we had a patch of weather cool enough to fire up the combustion heater of an evening and cold winds day and night. I think that cold burst started a lot of plants on their autumn journey here. What was the night temp. a week or two ago? Was the elm near a metal fence or shed wall (can be a cold micro climate) or exposed to evening winds more than the others?

funny you say that both near a brick wall ... bricks probably absorb the cold more and release the cold more .

thanks i think you may have just solved the problem as my chinese elm is also against brick wall ... darn small yards these days not room for trees!

I think - don't worry. I noticed a tree (English Elm) in the national collection twoweeks ago with a few yellowing leaves, and some of mine are also on the turn.

Absolutely normal Meagi. We had the 3-4 cold nights and it fooled my trees to ,as a few leaves turned yellow. The tree looks healthy. Nice colour if you can get it to happen all at once. Dont like our chances this year though. 35 % in my atrium at the moment.

Yes.

I agree, yes, absolutely normal. sometimes one will start to colour early while another nearby does not. Not always individual difference either. One year one will turn early the next year another will do it. At this stage I have put it down to stress in the tree but may not be.
