Hibiscus update

Post by Isitangus »

Morning all, a couple of months ago I picked up this hibiscus from a garden, not having any experience Witt them but loving all things flowering I thought why not.

This was it potted up, with a large amount of broken/thick/unwanted roots removed.
This is it two months later

Not only has it grown like mad it is also full of buds and flowers! I'm pleased about the flower size as its not one of the giant type-so think that with some leaf reduction will be acceptable in bonsai form.
I am now officially a fan of hibiscus, they are tough as nails, grow like mad with very little effort. I also took a variety of cuttings to see what would take, from pencil thickness to 3" across and all of them are powering along, some with buds but all with great new growth. All new growth on old hard wood. I defoliated one of them to see what would happen, and within two weeks was back to full leaf.
Anyways just thought I'd some some positive feedback on an under utilised plant!

Looks to me like one of the syriacus hybrids, they are deciduous and very hardy shrubs. They come in quite a number of colours, really old fashioned plants which seem to have disappeared from the nursery industry.
