[ID] Unhealthy forrest

Hi there,

I would really appreciate it if someone could confirm the species, and what could be causing the new foliage to droop as indicated in the photo. I have circled some of the problem areas.



Any advice would be much appreciated.

its a common everyday conifer/ cypress of some description. Did you buy it ?

It needs a bit of guidance with styling but good on you for taking the time to post the photo.

It looks like a bug ( a pircing mouth part insect ) has been having a go at it. The damage from the bug is causing the tip to dry out and die.

One of the chamaecyparis, possibly Hinoki. Can't tell you why it has a problem though.

Rudi, GOOGLE images Thuja Occidentalis. Do you mean "seed" when referring to droop? If so, stress is not the only factor when plants "seed". It might be just time to reproduce.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Could the deformation in the foliage be caused by moss growing on the tree perhaps? I have started to remove the moss with equal parts water and vinegar.

I have also taken the opportunity to repot. I moved one of the trees from a crowded area to an empty spot. Also wired the whole thing in properly to the pot as well as some of the loose trees to other secure ones. I also turned it about 15 degrees anti clockwise in the pot to get a better front view. Here it is. I used potting mix with pumice and sphagnum moss for the soil.

I am a beginner so am still learning. This forum has been a great help.

Hi there,

Seems like there are many possible reasons for the deformation in the foliage.

Here is a better photo of the problem. Hopefully you can see the tips of some of the foliage are puffed up, brighter green and drooping. It doesn't seem to be dying, in fact its quite plump and brightly coloured, and apart from the drooping, looks quite healthy.

I agree with the post above, looks like it's just growing seeds. Keep an eye on them and see, but if they start to look more like this then you have nothing to worry about.

Its rather embarrassing that I don't know what this plant's seeding process looks like. Sorry for my ignorance.

I must say though that I am fascinated by it now even more. I look forward to seeing it develop further. Nature in action is wonderful to behold.

No worries Rudi, we all have lots to learn. Part of what makes bonsai so much fun is seeing the changes our trees go through. I notice new things even on trees that I grew up with, just because I pay so much closer attention now.

Good luck with your forest, I know in some parts of the US those are used for bonsai quite a bit, and you've got a good start on it.
