Firs ever wiring attempt.

Hi there,

A family member just arrived back from Australia, (I live in New Zealand), with 5 coils of aluminium wire as a gift for me.

So immediately the next day I had to try for the first time ever to wire one of my trees. I was surprised how difficult and time consuming it really is. You guys make it look so easy.

During the process I cracked a couple of branches and had to quickly go get some raffia to tie them back together again. I hope it does the trick.

So here it is. I attempted to get the branches to flow better and to minimise overlap and bunching up.

What do you think?

Hi Rudi,
Looks very tidy. I'm not sure what your growing season is at the moment, but, keep your eye on the tree and remove the wire if you see any sign of the wire biting into the branches. You could seal where the branches cracked. It would be good to try and prevent water getting into the cracks.

Nice wiring first Effort Very tidy. Nice even spiral, and no Crossovers I can see

In Auckland you should be OK as the tree will be slowing down its growth, but still keep your eye on it.

Very nice job Rudi, however (there is always one) if you used the larger wire first on the trunk you will save your self wire.
As you have a problem getting supplies(I am assuming here).

I have noticed that with wireing the use of the correct wire is not always used. Try pushing the branch with the wire, if it bends and does not push the branch away from you, it is too small for that particular branch.

Or flexing the branch you wish to wire with for finger and thumb, then the wire you think is the right one, the resitence should be about the same.

That way you will have less wire on the tree, so you save wire and you have less to take off when needed.

Yes I agree with Pup about the right size wire being used. Ideally you should only ever need to use 2 wires. If you have no local bonsai nurseries there is a seller on eBay who sells chinese wire which is a bit cheaper. Also to my eye the second branch up on the left doesn't seem to be in harmony with the styling of the rest of the tree.
