Port Jackson Fig Progression

Post by Shinkitai »

I seem to have a lot of trouble making changes to the original bonsai I have from that stage of my bonsai life, but each time it has been worth it (apart from the cascade juniper which I cut to much off and killed :palm: ). After much dilemma and procrastination I cut of a lower branch that didn't seem to match the rest of the branches on a Port Jackson Fig I have had for 8 years. The result changed the tree so much for the better, and as a bonus I have a good size cutting. There is still plenty of room for improvement but I can now see a good direction for this fig. It is in a cheap bonsai pot, but I think I might start looking for a nice pot to suit it. I was thinking a pale natural colour shallow rectangle pot might suit? Will have to do some root work to get it to sit down a bit more first.

Having a look back at the progress of the fig it has always been in a bonsai pot, as that is what I did when first starting. Being in a bonsai pot of course makes it a bonsai  . My original thoughts were that if I planted then close together they would eventually fuse into one trunk. Of course it turns out you need to do a bit more then just stick them next to each other in a pot. The biggest growth has come over the last 6-9 months from when I started following ausbonsai. I have learnt so much already, who would have thought you need to feed plants, defoliation helps smaller leaves, pruning promotes back budding and better ramification :palm:

It is not a big fig like some I have seen, but I am looking forward to seeing where I can take this one in a few more years.
