Goulburn Visit by Uchi

Post by Watto »

I don't want to go into competition with Grant and the JBP progression, but the Goulburn Bonsai Society had the pleasure of hosting Yusuke Uchida for a members workshop on Sunday 14 April 2013, and we had a great time. Uchi was great to talk with and he gave very willingly of his knowledge & skill.
The Goulburn Bonsai Society is the proud owner of a "famous" Australian bonsai that dates back to the commencement of the GBS. Memory fails me a bit, but about 25 odd years ago Jim Barrett, an important figure in American bonsai toured Australia and did a demonstration for the people of Goulburn. He turned a very old and ragged looking Juniper Chinensis into a presentable bonsai in a few hours. At that time we were in awe of the skill, but to recoup our costs the tree was "raffled" and went off to its new owner.
To cut a long story short, after many years of hardship and neglect (and a couple of attacks by a dog) the tree came back to the GBS and has been brought back to health by one of our members over a number of years.
It was taken along to the workshop last Sunday to see if we could get some hints and advice on styling and design. In between the workshop happenings Uchi conducted some work on the tree and gave us a schedule to get the tree to exhibition standard.
The following photos are a sample of the day, and we thank Uchi very much for his kindness.

Would have been very interesting indeed.

I've been meaning to call in to a meeting but they usually conflict with my sport; I'll have to see if I can manage to stick my head in the door to say hello,

Yep, it was very interesting. The use of copper wire was worth the day by itself and now I think I will try and locate a roll or three just to play with.
The trimming was fasinating to watch as well.
